Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems

At Gurunanak Hospital, we proudly join the global celebration of World Breastfeeding Week (August 1st–7th) under the 2025 theme: “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.

Breastfeeding is more than a personal choice—it is a public health priority. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life offers unmatched protection and nourishment. Breast milk is uniquely tailored for each baby, rich in essential nutrients, living antibodies, and enzymes. It strengthens immunity, preventing diarrhoea, pneumonia, asthma, ear infections, and reducing the risk of metabolic diseases like Type 2 DM and childhood cancers.

It also supports healthy taste bud development, enhances cognitive growth, and contributes to better IQ and bone health, lowering the risk of osteoporosis in children. Breastfeeding promotes emotional bonding and lowers the risk of autism and obesity, building a healthier generation.

For mothers, breastfeeding helps in post-delivery uterine contraction, provides natural contraception, and reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

It is also a zero-waste, eco-friendly, and cost-effective method of infant feeding—making it an irreplaceable national and environmental resource.

Understanding that mothers need practical support, Gurunanak Hospital offers expert lactation counselling and hands-on guidance. We've also established a comfortable, private breastfeeding room—‘Heerkani Kaksh’—in our busy OPD area, ensuring dignity and convenience for nursing mothers.

This World Breastfeeding Week, let’s pledge to build sustainable support systems that empower every mother to breastfeed—because breastfeeding is not just good for babies; it’s good for the planet, too.
